Deed or title fraud occurs when someone forges a transfer of real property and is one of the fastest growing forms of identity theft in the country. Fraud of this nature can cause people to be wrongfully evicted from their home, often resulting in homelessness.

Victims of deed/title fraud can spend thousands of dollars in fraudulent payments to persons purporting to be landlords. The real property owner(s) can in turn spend thousands of dollars and fight through a very lengthy legal process to reclaim their property.

Shelandra Ford, the Shelby County Register of Deeds, will visit MAAR to give a presentation detailing how the Register's Office can assist with registering properties and how its Free Fraud Alert Program can help deter fraudulent property deed and title activities.

This event is a collaboration between the Shelby County Register of Deeds, NAREB Memphis and the Community Development Committee. No registration is necessary and all are encouraged to attend.
